Kunst is de blauwdruk van een tijdperk, een drager van ongrijpbare betekenis. Kunst vertegenwoordigt miljoenen euro's maar ook een zee van ontroering. Dit toegankelijke boek schetst in vijf hoofdstukken evenzoveel keer het verhaal van de beeldende kunsten in West-Europa van de oudheid tot moderne kunst. Zo wordt kunst niet gepresenteerd als een esthetische profetie, maar als een complex samenspel van menselijk vernuft en snel veranderende historische omstandigheden. Koenraad Jonckheere is hoogleraar kunstgeschiedenis aan de Universiteit Gent. Hij is gefascineerd door het verschijnsel kunst en schreef eerder over onder andere portretkunst, kunsthandel, iconoclasme en Rubens. Dit boek is zijn magnum opus.

L’État, en la personne de son souverain, a depuis toujours entretenu avec l’art un rapport privilégié. L’histoire de l’art qui traite des artistes et de leurs œuvres et l’histoire qui exalte la gloire du Prince se rencontrent aisément autour des Princes-mécènes qui ont encouragé les arts et honoré les artistes. Mais quand le Prince est devenu l’Etat républicain, depuis 1875 donc, tout devient beaucoup plus complexe. Comment définir un style, juger l’action, ou évaluer le rayonnement d’un « Prince » collectif, anonyme et changeant ? L’État républicain se veut respectueux de la liberté de création (intellectuelle, artistique), des goûts et des opinions de tout un chacun : peut-il avoir une politique de l’art, voire une esthétique qui inspire son mécénat ? Au-delà des simplifications habituelles sur « l’art officiel » et l’oppression des artistes d’avant-garde, Marie-Claude Genet-Delacroix montre que la gestion du patrimoine, la politique éducative en matière d’art, le soutien de la création s’intégrent dans un véritable système des Beaux-Arts qui, loin d’être un supplément d’âme accessoire, joue un rôle capital dans le triomphe et la pérennisation du modèle républicain français, libéral et démocratique.

Exile and migration played a critical role in the diffusion and development of modernism around the globe, yet have long remained largely understudied phenomena within art historiography. Focusing on the intersections of exile, artistic practice and urban space, this volume brings together contributions by international researchers committed to revising the historiography of modern art. It pays particular attention to metropolitan areas that were settled by migrant artists in the first half of the 20th century. These arrival cities developed into hubs of artistic activities and transcultural contact zones where ideas circulated, collaborations emerged, and concepts developed. Taking six major cities as a starting point--Bombay (now Mumbai), Buenos Aires, Istanbul, London, New York, and Shanghai -- the authors explore how urban topographies and landscapes were modified by exiled artists re-establishing their practices in metropolises across the world. Questioning the established canon of Western modernism, Arrival Cities investigates how the migration of artists to different urban spaces impacted their work and the historiography of art. In doing so, it aims to encourage the discussion between international scholars from different research fields, such as exile studies, art history, social history, architectural history, architecture, and urban studies.
